Jacob and Maddie's friendship started before the first episode of season one. Before they met, Maddie had only known about Jacob through his television shows and his last movie. Both Jacob and Maddie play sports but due to Jacob's back injury he was forced to give up his passion for football. While Liv was away in Hollywood, Maddie got to bond with Jacob and eventually became very close with him. During series premiere, Jacob and Maddie's friendship is put on hold so that Jacob could catch up with Liv and tell her.
